The February 2024 Great White Shark Expedition with Shark Biology Course in South Africa has just ended. It was the second expedition of the many great white shark expeditions we have carried out successfully since 2010 in South African waters, in which we didn’t see any great white shark. The worrying thing is that it is the second consecutive expedition without great white sharks. It now seems clear that none of the three locations (False Bay, Gansbaai and Mossel Bay) where it is possible to cage dive in the Western Cape anymore offers the regularity of encounters which is necessary to carry out our expeditions focused to the observation of white sharks. I therefore made the decision to still carry out the summer expedition in February 2025 on the 3 classic sites (False Bay, Gansbaai and Mossel Bay) but to simply bill it as Shark Expedition. The Great White Shark Expedition will be the winter one, taking place in August 2024, as we will go to cage dive at Bird Island in Algoa Bay, the only cage diving site in South Africa that currently offers solid possibilities of observing white sharks.

During the February 2024 expedition we were still able to observe four different species of sharks: bronze whaler or copper shark (portrayed in the photo), shortfin mako, blue shark and smooth hammerhead.

A huge thank you to our fantastic expedition guests and to the team of Apex Shark Expeditions for another beautiful adventure in this marvelous Country that we are lucky to call home.
